Since December 1, 1999, I have experienced severe chronic pain without much relief. I generally experience pain 24/7! That’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no time off for holidays. Over the years, my doctors have prescribed a variety of different drugs to reduce my pain without much success. Pain had become my life! I became preoccupied with reducing and alleviating my pain. I almost gave up hope and wondered why this had happened to me!
However, almost by accident I discovered something more effective then drugs for reducing my pain. Unable to work while I recovered from my injuries I found myself with a lot of free time. I had always been involved in doing volunteer work and I began to focus most of my free time on helping others. I noticed that while I was helping others I always felt some relief from pain. In fact, the more I helped others, the better I felt. I learned that doing acts of kindness, being kind actually reduced my pain.
Now, I focus a significant portion of my time and energy on learning to be a better person and taking care of myself. The rest of the time I focus on being kind and helping others. I make it a point to do something for someone else at least once a day. I also focus on writing about kindness and encouraging others to get involved. Kindness, doing kind and being kind has become my best medicine, no my best remedy for reducing pain!
